We have decided to launch a new support group specifically for parents of children with (Type 1) diabetes, after establishing that the needs of this particular group were currently not being met by any other support group in the area.
This new group is open to all parents of children with diabetes in Richmond, Twickenham and surrounding areas and the group’s aims are to enable parents to meet and share experiences and concerns in a mutually helpful and supportive environment.
Monday 13 September at St Mary’s Church Hall, 7 pm
Barbara Ralph, paediatric dietician, will talk about all aspects of diet for diabetic children and teenagers including carbohydrate counting.
23 March - Susie Reilly head of Care Events at Diabetes UK
19th January - First meeting
The first meeting was opened by our Chair, Alastair Mackinlay, and subsequently chaired by Kate Winstanley.
The meeting was well attended by an enthusiastic gathering of both parents and children. It was informal, and parents were encouraged to contribute their thoughts and observations on their experiences as well as to suggest future topics for discussion/events. Kate offered to chair future meetings of the group as required.
A wide range of topics were discussed from Diabetes UK support activities and support for children with diabetes in school to insulin pumps and babysitting. It is anticipated that the group will meet on a regular basis and will arrange appropriate events/activities.
